Background information

Surveillance for adult and pediatric influenza is a collaborative project between Oregon hospitals' infection control staff, Oregon Dept. of Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The project began because of an unusually early start to the 2003-2004 influenza season coupled with reports of influenza-associated complications and deaths in children. These anecdotal reports underlined the necessity of conducting population-based surveillance to assess the burden of influenza in pediatric patients. Adult influenza hospitalization surveillance began during the 2005-06 influenza season and expands upon the existing pediatric surveillance structure. The primary objective for these surveillance projects is to determine the rate of influenza among these populations as well as describe the characteristics of children and adults with severe flu. These projects also contribute to evaluations of current influenza vaccine recommendations.

Case definitions

Surveillance is conducted for three types of cases in Oregon:

• Hospitalization of an adult > 18 years old with lab-confirmed influenza (including rapid tests) for residents living in Washington, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties
• Hospitalization of a child < 18 years old with lab-confirmed influenza (including rapid tests) for residents living in Washington, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties

To report an adult or pediatric influenza-associated hospitalization or death in Oregon, please call Meredith Vandermeer in the Acute and Communicable Disease Program at DHS (971-673-1111) or, for hospital infection control staff, use the

eSentinel reporting system.

Pediatric surveillance data

  2007-2008: There were 28 hospitalizations and 1 death associated with pediatric influenza in the Portland tri-county area (Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington).
