Making a Difference Statewide

Statewide Fact Sheet (PDF)

You may not realize it, but every day you come in contact with the work that we do no matter where you live. Finding safe, healthy food in restaurants; sipping clean, clear drinking water; being free from exposure to serious illness because of immunizations – all this and more is part of our charge to help ensure all Oregonians are as healthy and safe as possible.

We also help meet the basic needs of the vulnerable, those facing poverty, and the abused among us. We assist seniors and people with disabilities live as independently as possible. And we give support to low-income Oregonians to obtain health care and treatment for mental health and addiction problems. We help the economy throughout the state through the community programs we help fund, the jobs we help people find, and the income assistance, health care, and food stamps received by poverty-stricken individuals and families – dollars that are all pumped back into local economies.

By taxpayer funding and the delivery of this work, all of us are making a difference in the lives of people around us who are sometimes the most forgotten, abandoned, or overlooked in our society.

Making a Difference by County

DHS is making a difference in every county in Oregon, through partnerships with state and local agencies, non-profit groups, faith-based organizations, schools, businesses and providers of physical and mental health care, alcohol and drug treatment programs and other areas.

In this section, you will find county listings with a Fact Sheet about our impact on the county, and at least one story about someone in whose life we've made a difference. We'll post more information as soon as it becomes available.

Unsung Heroes Making a Difference

Soon we will have links to stories about DHS staff, our community partners, or others - who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others, in the communities they live in, or in saving taxpayer dollars by operating more efficiently and accountably.

Do you know of a hero and the work they’ve done that you would like to share with us? You can email your suggestions for recognizing a hero to DHS.HEROES@state.or.us.

Do you have a story about an individual, community, or program that DHS and/or its local community partners have helped? Download the Making a Difference Story Suggestion Form (RTF format, PDF format) and return it to us, following the directions on the form.
